These terms apply when you visit studioshapeschicago.com, use the studioSHAPES member operations dashboard at studioshapes-operations.netlify.app, or otherwise engage with studioSHAPES services. By using studioSHAPES, you agree to these terms.

If you do not agree, please do not use studioSHAPES.

1. About studioSHAPES

studioSHAPES is a Chicago-based creative house, recording studio, and membership-driven artist ecosystem operating at 2425 W 14th Street. We provide studio space, development support, programming, and a member dashboard to coordinate it all.

In these terms, "studioSHAPES," "we," "us," and "our" refer to the studioSHAPES organization. "You" or "member" refers to anyone using our services.

2. Membership

Membership in studioSHAPES is selective and developmental, not transactional. The application, interview, and onboarding process is designed to ensure alignment between artists and the studio.

Membership eligibility:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to apply
  • You must complete the inquiry and interview process
  • studioSHAPES reserves the right to accept or decline any applicant for any lawful reason

Membership status:

  • Membership is granted on a monthly basis
  • Membership fees are due each cycle and are non-refundable except where required by law
  • studioSHAPES may modify member tiers, perks, pricing, and program structure at our discretion, with reasonable notice to active members

Conduct: By being a member, you agree to:

  • Respect studio space, equipment, staff, and other members
  • Follow the house rules communicated by studioSHAPES staff
  • Not engage in harassment, discrimination, theft, or unsafe behavior
  • Not bring unapproved guests into the space
  • Use studio resources only for the purposes you booked them for

studioSHAPES may suspend or end your membership for violations of these conduct standards, non-payment of fees, or any other lawful reason. We will communicate clearly when this happens.

3. Your account

When you create or activate a studioSHAPES account, you agree to:

  • Provide accurate information
  • Keep your password confidential and not share your account
  • Notify us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised
  • Be responsible for activity that happens under your account

We use Supabase Auth for authentication. Your password is encrypted and we never see it in plaintext.

4. Studio bookings, sessions, and events

Bookings: Members may book sessions through the dashboard. Bookings consume hours from your monthly allotment unless otherwise noted. Cancellations and reschedules follow the policies communicated at the time of booking.

Add-on collaborators: If you add another member or staff to your team as a paid add-on, you authorize studioSHAPES to facilitate the payment arrangement between you, that collaborator, and the studio.

Events: studioSHAPES hosts public events, member events, and private gatherings. By attending, you agree to follow the venue's house rules and the event's specific terms.

Photography and recording: studioSHAPES events may be photographed or recorded for archival, promotional, or community-building purposes. By attending, you consent to your likeness being captured, unless you tell us otherwise in writing in advance.

5. Your content

You may upload notes, descriptions, profile information, and other content to studioSHAPES. You retain all rights to your creative work.

By submitting content to the studioSHAPES dashboard, you grant studioSHAPES a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, display, and operate that content for the purpose of providing services to you. This license ends when you delete the content or close your account, except where we are legally required to retain it.

You agree not to submit content that:

  • Infringes someone else's rights (copyright, trademark, privacy, etc.)
  • Is illegal, harassing, threatening, or harmful
  • Contains malware or attempts to compromise our systems

We may remove content that violates these rules.

6. Intellectual property

The studioSHAPES name, logo, dashboard, written materials, and visual identity are owned by studioSHAPES. You may not copy or reuse them without permission, except for normal use of the dashboard as a member.

The music, photography, video, and other creative work produced at studioSHAPES belongs to its creators. studioSHAPES makes no claim to your art unless we have a separate written agreement.

7. Payments and fees

Membership fees and add-on charges are communicated to you before you commit. We use third-party payment processors and do not store your credit card information. You are responsible for keeping your payment information accurate.

If a payment fails or is reversed without good cause, your membership may be suspended until the matter is resolved.

We may change pricing with reasonable notice, generally not affecting fees you have already paid.

8. Third-party services

studioSHAPES uses third-party services to operate, including:

  • Supabase for authentication and database
  • Netlify for hosting the member dashboard
  • Google Calendar for session scheduling
  • Squarespace for our public website

These services have their own terms and privacy policies. Issues with those services are governed by their own agreements.

9. Studio safety

The physical studioSHAPES space is provided as-is. By entering the space, you accept ordinary risks of being in a working studio. You agree to follow staff instructions, respect equipment, and report any safety concerns immediately.

studioSHAPES is not responsible for personal property left in the space. Lock things up, label things, take things home.

10. Disclaimers

studioSHAPES provides services on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We work hard to keep the dashboard running smoothly, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access or freedom from errors. We are not liable for issues caused by third-party services we depend on.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, studioSHAPES disclaims all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, studioSHAPES, its founders, staff, contractors, and partners are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of studioSHAPES, including lost profits, lost data, or loss of opportunity.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these terms or your use of studioSHAPES will not exceed the total amount you have paid to studioSHAPES in the 12 months before the claim arose.

This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law.

12. Termination

You may end your membership at any time by contacting us. studioSHAPES may end your membership at any time for the reasons described in Section 2 or for other lawful reasons.

When membership ends:

  • Your access to the dashboard ends
  • Your data is retained or deleted in accordance with the Privacy Policy
  • Sections of these terms that should survive termination (such as intellectual property, disclaimers, and limitation of liability) survive

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Cook County, Illinois, and you consent to that jurisdiction.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as studioSHAPES evolves. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top. For significant changes, we will notify members through the dashboard or by email. Continued use of studioSHAPES after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
